In Your Day Pack: » Small plastic plate & cup, or a sierra cup (No Mess Kits) » Eating utensils, fork & spoon, plastic or metal » Pocket knife » Bottle with water » Rain gear » Winter Jacket that can fit in the pack (if possible) » Fleece or warm sweater (zippered type is good) » Small sandwich & power bar » Compass » Matches » Mini flashlight » Pencil and small notepad What To Wear: » MANDATORY - Water Resistant Hiking Boots (* NO SNEAKERS *) » MANDATORY - Hat (make sure it covers your ears) » MANDATORY - Gloves » Cotton blend or Cord pants (Try not to wear jeans as they dry too slowly) » Warm socks (wool or thermal) » Sock liners (if you have them) » Scarf Tips: » PACK AS LIGHT AS POSSIBLE » Dress in layers and for the climate » Plan for the coldest weather possible » Have good footwear. Make sure that your boots are well broken in and that they are suitable for the terrain. » Cotton IS NOT your friend » Wear synthetics, fleece and wool » Always plan for precipitation » Beware of blisters » When you're hiking, don't strip down to your bottom layer the second you get hot. Instead, take layers on and off gradually.
